Canvas Navigational Bar Changes: Effective September 2019

Effective September 21st, the navigational bar in Canvas will change directly impacting your course view.  The navigational bar will have eyeballs with a line through it to denote that these course navigational links are hidden from the student view as before they were grayed out.

Here is a video to demonstrate the change.

If a teacher wants to hide a section from the navigational bar, they will still go to “Settings/Navigation and pull down the section(s) they want to hide.  Don't forget to select “Save” to make the changes go into effect.

Managing Calendars in Canvas

Customizing your calendar view in Canvas makes it easy to manage entering due dates and scheduling course reminders for multiple courses.
Calendar Sidebar
Image: Calendar Sidebar
Toggle between courses. Remember that you don’t have to navigate away from the calendar page to access all of your course calendars. In the sidebar on the right side of the page, click the color boxes to show or hide each course’s calendar contents. When the color is active [1], the calendar contents for that course will display on the calendar, and when the color is gray [2], the calendar contents are hidden.

Color code your courses. You can change the color scheme of the course calendar by clicking the three dots to the right of the course name [3]. Choose from one of the 15 default colors, or set a custom color by entering a Hex code [4].

Note: Changing the color scheme in the calendar view will also change the color of the course’s tile on the Dashboard.

To learn about more calendar features in Canvas, view this Canvas Guide video about Calendars.

Canvas Blueprint

Work on a team that uses Canvas all of the time? Tired of importing every time there is a change in the master course? Then the Blueprint option might be for you!

All teachers work in the SAME MASTER COURSE and then click a “sync” button to push ALL changes to ALL student courses at once! It’s super easy to keep everyone up-to-date!

BluePrint syncs all course content, even the calendar!

This is best done at the beginning of the semester because any content in your current, live student course will be deleted and “filled” with whatever is in the master course. You can still keep your individual style in your courses, but in order to set up Blueprint, your student courses need to be empty for the initial import. Once the import takes place, you can customize your individual courses.

Ready to BluePrint? Team Leads, please click here to fill out the form.

Need to Cross-list your courses first?  Click here to watch a video on how to Cross-list.

Crosslisting

Crosslisting

In Canvas, the process of combining enrollments from two or more sections in one course is called cross-listing.

Why cross-list?
  • Limit the number of times you will need to import content from your Master Course.
  • Maintain all content for multiple sections in one Parent Course.
  • You want the different sections of students in your course to interact with one another in Discussions, etc.
  • You can see students by section in the Canvas grade book.
  • Create separate Assignment due dates and times by section.
Secondary Teachers An automated step by step process was created for you to easily cross-list courses. Please watch the video to learn more about cross-listing your courses. https://tinyurl.com/1819crosslistvideo

Nearpod Integrates with Canvas

Teachers can use Nearpod effectively in the classroom to support student learning in a variety of ways. Students are given opportunities for interaction and immediate feedback, while teachers receive reports on student responses. Nearpod now integrates with Canvas, allowing for a ease of use for everyone. With this integration a code is no longer necessary for students to connect. Individual student responses are displayed within SpeedGrader when a Nearpod lesson is added as an assignment within Canvas. Sounds like a win-win for both teachers and students.

Watch this video for step-by-step instructions.

Canvas App Integration Vol. 1: Canvas + Flipgrid

Did you know many of the best ed. tech tools teachers use can be directly integrated into Canvas? Did you know Flipgrid is one of them? Flipgrid has a great LTI (the integration standard Canvas uses) that allows you to create, assign, and grade Flipgrid videos directly in Canvas. If you don't know what Flipgrid is...now is the time to find out!

Flipgrid is the leading educational video platform for discussion and formative assessment.  Flipgrid works on all devices, has a super user friendly interface, and best of all, it's FREE!!

Flip is great for:

  •  brainstorming
  •  telling stories
  • debate
  • reflection
  • flipped classroom
  • student response
  • collaboration
  • performances
  • presentations

What are the benefits of integrating Flipgrid into Canvas?

  • You can assign the Flipgrid as a gradable assignment.
  • You can view individual student responses in Speedgrader (and Grade).
  • You can assign rubrics to the Flipgrid Assignment.
  • You bypass the need for providing flipcodes (to assign the Flipgrid Topic) since students access the Flipgrid topic through Canvas.

There are a few steps you have to take to integrate Flipgrid into Canvas. This handy guide will walk you through the steps. If you need any assistance, reach out to your CTD. Prior to following the guide, visit Flipgrid.com and 'Sign up with Google' using your Katy ISD login credentials.
